A Call to Pens
Do any of these publications strike a chord: Rolling Stone? Spin? Billboard? These magazines are crucial to staying in touch with the music industry (not to mention, reaching billions of readers world wide).
Just as a musician might practice their instrument to keep up those performance "chops," a writer might journal their observations to keep the words and ideas flowing. Whether it's a podcast, a blog, or video diary, being able to communicate in any media format is vital to staying in tune with your audience.
I've found that some of my fellow musicians are reluctant to write their own press releases or shy away from printed media all together. Some might insist that they are too "right brained" to express their musical thoughts into words, but just like their instruments, writing takes practice too. In all fairness, a "left brained" person can learn to play a few scales as long as they put forth the time and effort.
While taking a Writing in the Content Area course, a professor made it clear that students' Writing Competency scores are most likely low on account of little to almost no instruction on How to write.
True, "Reading is fundamental;" however, Writing is Essential! Any suggestions on how to encourage students of all ages to pick up a pen (or keyboard) now and then are certainly welcome!
